I didn’t quit therapy!  I just missed the last two weeks because of JW’s schedule and then I got sick.

We have stopped traditional talk therapy and begun EMDR therapy.  EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is a ‘form of psychotherapy which uses eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to purportedly assist clients in processing distressing memories and beliefs.’ There’s more on EMDR on the Institute’s website  (I don’t want to read too much about it before I do it).

The first session was devoted to carving out my safe calm place and ‘history taking.’  I described this place in great detail to her, from all sensory perspectives, which took almost 20 minutes.  That exercise was really meditative by itself.

I’d recommend finding a safe, calm place to anyone (just Google ‘creating a safe space in your mind’ for more on this).  It’s a tool I’ll use not only in EMDR but in my daily life when I am feeling frantic or stressed.

The primary reason I’m trying this is that other loss moms have said they found it very helpful.  We will see….
