my deer friend

i was just having one of those mornings
traveling from here to there
and then the grocery store

and the stench of my isolation
and apprehension
had all but suffocated me completely

and then suddenly there she was
a gorgeous majestic creature
dashing through someone’s lawn

abruptly halting at the edge of the road
she reconsidered her path
and turned to prance back into the woods

but before she leapt off
i swear she looked at me
and smiled
and i smelled the calming, reassuring scent
of summer
