it was such a small comment
“you’re missing someone!” the man teased
as he handed my two boys a kit-kat and a lollipop
it’s true —
they were dressed as matching superheroes
but missing the third in the trio
the girl superhero, of course
my heart sank when he said it
because he has no idea
how true it is
that we are missing someone
we are missing our girl superhero
and my heart kept sinking from my chest
to my stomach and my groin
it shot through my feet
and landed underground
parallel to where she lies eternally
and i stayed with her as long as the world would let me
about 3 or 4 seconds
and then it was time for the boys
to move on to another house
another doorbell
another bowl of candy
where another sweet ghost would be whispering
trick-or-treat
