Why must we call it Good Friday here?
Black Friday seems more on the nose.
For the first time in my life,
this day is not about Jesus,
or His suffering
or the promise of Resurrection.
It is about Mary
watching her firstborn son hanging in pain,
hanging in death,
and not being able
to stop it.
It is about a son loving his mother
“Woman, behold your son”
as His earthly end drew near.
It is about a son taking care of his mother
“Behold your mother”
with His last few breaths.
It is about a spiritual maternity beginning
at the foot of the cross
it is about honoring your children
who have departed
when you are still here, but they have gone there
when it is your only option left.
