i wrote her name in the sand today

we made it out to Eichler’s Cove
after weeks of promising the boys
we’d go build sand castles

and we built and we built and we built
and the waves knocked them all down

and the boys got mad
and they yelled at the river
for acting like a river

and i understood
and i suggested we build farther
from the water

and they squealed in delight
and grabbed their shovels
and their buckets
and started to rebuild their castles

and i wrote her name in the sand
